Imaginary house decoration is one of my passions! Of course, if I had the money, I do it for real! I love to think about the different colour schemes, furniture, art and soft furnishing that would look great in my Weston Super Mare home. Let’s get creative together and think about some of the options to consider when decorating.
- DIY or hire someone?
Well. I know this is a bit of a controversial one. Many people like to save some money on decorating and do it themselves. Some love the satisfaction of learning how to do the job and then completing it without any help, and there is nothing wrong with that. I would urge you to consider, though, that there are some jobs you cannot do yourself unless you are a qualified plumber or electrician. Others go for professional help for jobs that they could do themselves but don’t know how to do or haven’t got the time. If you do choose to get in some outside help, use an online review service so you know you’re getting the best value for money and not a fly by night cowboy.
- What needs doing?
Ok, so you’ve made the hard decision on whether to do the grunt work yourself or hire someone in to help you. Now have a think about what you need doing? Is it all decorative work? Does any plaster need to be replaced or any carpets put down. Things like this will cost a bit extra, so now might be the time to check that budget to make sure you can finish the room in one go.
- Color Scheme
One of the most important things in decorating a room is choosing a colour scheme. One of the things I love is to go for a more neutral base and then add in seasonal pops of colour. If you are having trouble with your colour scheme choices, check out my advice here.
You can have some real fun with your artistic choices. You could choose something abstract, go for a picture wall or even some vinyl wall art. A hanging picture can be a pain so check out this guide here. Whatever you choose make sure it reflects your style. My best advice here is to pick something that you love. Then it’ll make you room look great and be a great investment for the future.
- Furniture and Soft Furnishing
Your next consideration is going to be, what type of furniture and fabric items you’re going to have in the room? You might already have some classic or retro prices that you want to include, so you need to make sure that the rest compliments it. Notice I didn’t say ‘goes with.’ That right, you don’t have to have everything matchy-matchy, an eclectic style is perfectly acceptable and can look stylish. You can also consider seasonal looks with your soft furnishing. For the cost of a few accessories, you can change the whole feel of a room and make it much more fun. Who could resist cute Christmas cushions or beautiful summer pastels?
