Winter is pretty much here if the frost on the grass this morning is anything to go by! As well as wearing warm knits and chunky socks, it feels like the perfect time to make our homes a little cosier. There is just something about the darker evenings that makes more people stay in and get cosy. So how can you make your home perfect for the season? Here are just a few ideas. Then you can just pick and choose what suits you, your style and budget.
Change the Colour Scheme
You might only want to do this in one or two rooms, if at all. But the colours in a room make such a difference to how we feel. Colours like light blue and white, for example, can make a room feel much colder. So if your main living area is in these colours, it might be worth making a change. Warmer colour options are oranges, browns, and more neutral cream colours.
If you want to create a sense of winter in the home, then there is no cosier way to do that than with scented candles. Not only are they a light source, they really can create an atmosphere too. Choose scents that are suited to the season. Candles that are scented with pine or cinnamon are great options when it comes to winter and Christmas time. If you are concerned about toxins that paraffin candles can give off, then look for alternatives. You could choose beeswax or soy candles, or even use essential oils.
There is such a cosy atmosphere that can come from using curtains in the home. If you mostly have blinds, then it might be worth getting some when it comes to winter. First of all, they frame windows really nicely. So when you walk in a room, it looks better and much cosier. The second thing that is great about them is that they keep in the heat. I can’t think of more of a practical thing to have. If you can, tuck the curtains behind the radiator overnight. Then any heat from the radiator stays in the home, rather than seeping through a window. The third thing that is great is that about curtains is the atmosphere that they create. We layer up our clothing in winter, so it is similar to that. When you layer things up in a room, it makes things seem much cosier.
The final touches to help keep a room feeling cosy is having plenty of cute and cosy accessories. If there was ever an excuse to snuggle on the sofa with a blanket, then winter is the time. So get yourself some warm and soft throw blankets. Extra scatter cushions will look good on your bedding, as well as on sofas and chairs. Getting a few different, but similarly patterned, is a good idea as it creates a more homely feel. Perfect for getting cosy and keeping warm over the cold winter months.
