When you’re a mother, there are so many things that you have to clean on a daily basis. It’s like constantly clearing up after a party that you haven’t been invited to, and it’s a chore that can become tedious rather quickly. We get ourselves into a routine, know what needs to be done first and which things can wait a while longer, and as long as the house is presentable to some degree then the job is done – it’s just going to get ruined the next day anyway, right?
But there are some things that we are neglecting to do. Things that do require cleaning and our attention, even if it’s only once a year. While we’re so caught up in the whirlwind of making the things sparkle that we know we should, we also need to consider these things…
Within the kitchen there’s a lot of stuff that can get dirty rather quickly – especially if you’re regularly cooking in there. It’s the room in the house that probably needs at least one thing to be given a wipe-over on a daily basis. But while you’re wiping down the surfaces and cleaning the dishes, give thought to the hood above your cooker if you have one; this usually houses the extraction fan for any steam and smoke that comes off your cooking. These filters need replacing after 3-6 months depending on usage, and with the availability of carbon charcoal filters online, there’s no excuse to not give the hood a wipe down and replace the filter while you’re doing it. The buildup of grease inside may just surprise you. If you have any odours in lingering around your kitchen, the cleaning of the hood and replacement of the filter may be able to sort this out.
A quick vacuum of your living room can get rid of most bits of debris, but think about other places that crumbs could be lurking. Lift up the cushions on your sofa and make sure that you are sucking out every nook and cranny available that could be harbouring bits of food, dirt and dust. Especially if you have children, you may just be surprised at what you find hiding under there.
Changing your bedding is something that should be done at least every two weeks, and most people stick to this rule. But if you haven’t recently hoovered your mattress (or have ever done it…), it’s time to think about it. It’ll help to get rid of any dust that is lurking on there and rid of most of the dust mites that will naturally have made your bed their home. Plus, if you haven’t changed your mattress in 8 years, it may need replacing. If you get into the habit of giving your mattress a once-over every time you change your bedding, it won’t seem like such a weird thing to do – although it’s recommended that you only do it twice a year, so you’ll be one step ahead if you do it as often as changing your bedding.
