Your bedroom shouldn’t just the be the place that you go to sleep at night; It should be your sanctuary and a place where you can relax. Unfortunately, if your bedroom is cluttered and small, you aren’t going to feel comfortable in there, which means that you’ll be unable to relax, and may even struggle to get to sleep at night. There are ways to maximise space in every room of your house, and, luckily, your bedroom is no different. Here are seven things that you can do.
- Get A Smaller Bed
The main purpose of your bedroom is to sleep, so your bed usually takes up the most space within it. However, as much as you may like your huge king-sized bed, you don’t actually need one. If you really want to free up some extra space, you should consider downsizing. Of course, you may not want to go from a king to a double, so go for a medium ground, and find a nice queen instead.
- Switch To A Divan
Wardrobes and dressers take up a lot of space in a room, so you might want to think about getting rid of them to open up your room a little. Alternatively, you could keep the bed you have, and just purchase some rolling storage for under your bed instead.
- Organise Your Storage
Regardless of the storage you have, it’s essential that it’s properly organised to maximise space. When it comes to your closet, you might want to think about putting seasonal clothes, like jumpers and shorts, up in the loft when they’re not needed. This means you only have to fit in what you need right now.

If you want your room to feel bigger, you have to have as little on the floor as possible. Of course, this stuff has to go somewhere, so see if there’s any way that you can mount some of your belongings to the wall. For example, you could switch your large floor mirror to a wall mirror. You could also get rid of your bookshelves, and install some shelving on your wall instead. Things like TVs and lighting can also be mounted on a wall, so they’re not taking up floor space.
- Consider A Sofa Bed
If your bedroom is also used as an office or a playroom for your children, you’ll need a lot more space than most. To achieve maximum space, you could get yourself a sofa bed. This way, you’ve still got a large bed to sleep on at night, but you can put it away during the day so that you have space to work or play. These days, you can find some really nice sofa beds, so don’t dismiss the idea too quickly.
- Move Your Things
A very simple way to increase space in your bedroom is to remove things from it. As I have already mentioned, you could take out seasonal clothing, and put it in your loft, but if you want a lot of space, then you could go one step further and remove all of your clothes from your room. These could then be put in a closet in a guest bedroom, so you don’t have to fill your room with large wardrobes. All you need to do is leave some storage for when guests do stay over.
- Think Outside The Box
If you’ve got to this point, and still feel as though your room is too small, then it’s time to start thinking outside of the box and look for storage spaces in unobvious places. For example, you could have a storage rack on the back of your door for makeup and toiletries. You could also change the stool for your dressing table to one that has storage inside and can do something similar with a window seat.
Your bedroom may feel really small, and perhaps it is, but there are always a few ways to make it look and feel a little bigger. All it takes is a bit of thinking outside the box, and you’ll soon have more space than you know what to do with.
