Knock Knock: When Should You Replace Your Doors?

Out of all the home improvements and renovations we make, far too many people forget about doors. We open and close them every day, we rely on them for privacy and safety, and we often treat them with far less care than we do for the rest of our house. We slam them, we kick them, we bump into them and we sometimes scratch the paint off them when we’re moving heavy objects around the house.

Since our doors serve so many important purposes, it only makes sense to replace them once in awhile to make our homes function better but to also give our rooms a much-needed decor upgrade. After all, doors are visible all the time and take up a large portion of our daily vision, so why not make them look more pleasing?

Squeaky Doors

If simply opening and closing your doors makes them cry out in pain, then you’ll have to replace them sooner or later. Sure, you can squeeze a bit of lubricant on the hinges and shake the door a bit to remove the squeaky noises, but you’ll have to take out the hinges if you want the lubricant to settle in deep enough to remedy the problem entirely. However, since you’re going to be taking the door apart anyway, there’s no harm in going the extra mile and replacing the hinges altogether or even the door itself. Loose hinges are usually an unwanted side effect of squeaky doors, so you’d be better off replacing them sooner or later unless you want someone to break into your home more easily.

Visible Cracks

Not only do cracks look horrible, they also invest unwanted drafts, rodents and pests. You usually need a bit of clearance between the floor and your door o that it doesn’t scratch, but you want this clearance to be as low as possible and if your seems to be shrinking or cracking more often, then it’s probably a sign of the wood itself rotting or becoming weaker. Get a new door and buy a fresh new handle from a supplier such as Handle Hardware to give your home a brand new door. You’ll be surprised at how much more refreshing it will be to look at a new door with a shiny new handle!

A Decor Upgrade

Let’s face it, sometimes the only reason we need to upgrade something in the home is to make it look a lot nicer. If you’re in this situation, then don’t be afraid to upgrade your regular old swinging door into a sliding door, or simply replace it with something that looks completely new and modern compared to your old door. There are thousands of new door ideas available on the internet and you’d be hard pressed to find something you don’t like. These renovations can be quite costly and, depending on the size of your door frame, you might need to cut the door down to size. This makes it the ideal job for a DIY-savvy person or even a contractor.
