What is your home for if not relaxing? Yes, it may be where you keep your belongings, and ultimately where you put your head down at night. But, there’s a lot more to a house than that. For the most part, your home should be your sanctuary. It’s the place that holds you together during stressful life events. When you have a bad day, you think of returning home and escaping from it all. Our need for shelter and safety aside, that is the beautiful thing about having a house of our own. It becomes a comfort and a friend when we need it the most.
Of course, as with any friendship, you need to put work in to get the most of your home. It may be a haven because it’s yours, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good place to relax. If you make no efforts to use what you’ve got, coming home could feel like more of a headache than an escape. So, how can you ensure that you use your home’s relaxation potential?
MAKE SPACE FOR WHAT YOU LOVE
How can you relax if you haven’t made space for what you love? Having a room for the thing you like best is essential. More important, in fact, than having room for guests that barely ever come. Make the most of your spare room by turning it over to your hobby. If you love reading, make yourself a library. Buy some shelves and start stocking them with your favorite reads. And, don’t forget to buy a comfortable chair to do some reading in. Or, is music what you like best? Treat yourself to a high-quality sound system and get set up. You’ll be able to build your CD collection when you have a whole room to store them in. If you’re worried about the neighbors, you could even buy some brand new headphones to listen through! You could even turn your spare room into a meditation or yoga room if that’s what you enjoy. It doesn’t get more relaxing than that, does it?
A lot of people refuse to consider a house without a bath. If you ask us, it makes sense. A shower may get you clean, but who bathes for cleanliness? If you ask most people, the cleaning properties of a bath are a side effect. Instead, people bathe for relaxation. After a hard day, nothing beats the feeling of sliding into a bubbly bathtub. DEMOTE THE TELEVISION
This may seem a strange point. Most of us use the television to relax of an evening, don’t we? Televisions are the centrepieces in most living rooms across the country. But, what if that doesn’t have to be the case? In a lot of ways, televisions may not be as relaxing as we think. In fact, they monopolise our free time and make us feel like we have less of it. When you’re watching an hour-long programme at a time, the evening flies by, doesn’t it? That’s because you’re absorbed in watching the programme and don’t appreciate the time. And yet, so many of us put off starting new hobbies because ‘we don’t have time.’ To test the theory, try spending one evening with the television off.
There’s no denying that it’ll feel strange at first. If the silence bothers you, listen to music instead. Again, this would be a wonderful chance to read a book. Or, you could start that hobby you’ve been meaning to get to. Or, how about learning that language you’ve never managed to master? Once you remove the television from your routine, it’ll amaze you how much more time you have on your hands. Each hour will feel like double the time it did when you had your head stuck in pointless programmes.
No room is better for relaxation than the bedroom. This is where you spend your best resting hours, after all. The bedroom is relaxing by its very nature. But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t small things you can do to make it even cosier. You want a room that settles your worries the moment you enter it. Incorporating fairy lights, or light bulbs that emit a gentle, yellow light, is a sure way to relax you. Think, too, about your bed itself. Buy a good quality mattress that is sure to send you to sleep the moment you lay down. It’s also worth thinking about your pillows. No one likes to wake up with neck ache, after all!
THE SMALL TOUCHES
That big stuff aside, the little touches can also turn your home into a haven. Surround yourself with things that improve your mood. Hang photographs of happy memories with the people you love most. They’re sure to make the space feel more like your own. Think, too, about incorporating houseplants into your home, there are some great air purifying plants. Having a little nature indoors is good for the air quality, and your mental wellbeing!
