At the end of a long day, your bedroom is your retreat from the world. The place where you feel cozy, safe and secure- somewhere to recharge so you can get back out there into the world and handle whatever life throws at you. If yours is dull and uninspiring, here’s how you can create a dreamy place to dream.
Get It Spotless
Before making any changes to the decor, give the room a good deep clean. Ideally, remove all of the existing furniture and move it elsewhere so you can thoroughly clean and get a good look at the space. If you’re keeping the carpet, consider hiring a carpet cleaner to get it back up to scratch. Clean skirting boards, windows, window frames and anywhere else that dust can gather.
Repaint The Walls
If the room has been emptied for cleaning, this step will be a piece of cake. Cover the floors with old sheets and roll on a fresh new color onto the walls. Go with a light shade which will bounce the light around and make the room feel more spacious. If you’re not sure what color to go for, a neutral is your best bet. White, ivory and light gray will work well with many different accent shades.
Think About The Bed
As the most important thing in the room, the bed needs some careful consideration. Your mattress should be changed after seven years, your duvet after five and your pillows after a year or two. If you’re overdue a change, switching these out will make you feel so much fresher and contribute to a more comfortable night’s sleep. Since these things can all harbor dust mites (and will gather more and more as the years go by), they can set off allergies and also lose their spring and comfort. High quality Egyptian cotton sheets will feel soft against the skin and add a little luxury to the room. Again you could choose neutral colors, and add an accent shade to the room with cushions and throws to dress it up.
Find The Right Storage
As well as a place to sleep, your bedroom is home to most of your possessions. So good storage is important! Carefully measure the space you have, and look at dimensions online when you’re buying furniture. If you have a smaller bedroom, tall and thin chests of drawers will give you the maximum storage for the least amount of floor space. Using shelves is useful too, at you can utilize the wall space. Store things in baskets on shelves to keep them looking neat and tidy.
Finish With Decorative Accessories
Finally, decorative accessories are how you bring personality to the room. The trick is to make it look homely without being cluttered. Anything that’s smaller than a grapefruit, group together on a tray. You could add framed photos, ornaments, plants and flowers which will bring a cheery and personal look to the space.
