Hit show The Big Bang Theory has been running for years now, and it’s still a hugely popular comedy. For many viewers, what makes the show so great is its incredible cast. There are lots of things about them that you might not know outside of The Big Bang Theory, however.
- Mayim Bialik’s Science Background
Most of the characters on The Big Bang Theory have scientific backgrounds. But Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy, is the only actor who really does have an education in science. She has a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA, and before that she completed a BS in the same subject.
- Kaley Cuoco’s Shoe Obsession
While we’re sure Kaley Cuoco isn’t as ditzy as her character Penny, she is still a fashion fanatic. In particular, she has a large collection of shoes. If you check out different celebrity heights and weights, you’ll see that she’s shorter than average. Perhaps that’s why she loves heels so much.
- Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki Dating History
Just like Penny and Leonard are a couple in the show, the two actors once dated off-screen too. They kept the relationship a secret for quite a while, but eventually broke up. They’re still good friends.
- Jim Parsons’ Muppet Counterpart
If you haven’t seen the 2011 movie The Muppets, you missed a cameo from Jim Parsons. He appears as the human version of the main muppet character, Walter, as he and Jason Segel’s character sing a song. The song, called Man or Muppet, won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 84th Academy Awards.
- Musical Talent
Three of the characters on The Big Bang Theory play instruments. Leonard plays the cello, Amy plays the harp, and Sheldon plays the theremin. Each of the actor’s learned to play these instruments for the show. So you know when you watch them, they’re not just miming!
- Melissa Rauch’s Bernadette Voice
If you’ve seen any interviews with Melissa Rauch, you’ll know Bernadette’s voice isn’t real. She says that it’s based on her mother, at least in tone. It’s more high pitched than the actress speaks in real life.
- Big Bucks
Acting on The Big Bang Theory certainly doesn’t pay peanuts. In 2014, three of the main cast signed contracts to be paid $1 million per episode. In fact, the four male actors were the highest earning TV actors in 2014-2015.
- Simon Helberg’s Black Belt
Helberg, who plays Wolowitz, is the son of an actor and casting director. But it was karate that was his passion as a child, not acting. He obtained his black belt when he was only nine years old.
- Johnny Galecki and Mayim Bialik’s Fictional Dating History
The two actors’ characters dated in an episode of The Big Bang Theory. They also have a longer fictional dating history, dating back to the ’90s. Bialik starred in Blossom and Galecki appeared as her date in an episode in 1991.
- Kunal Nayyar’s Birthplace
Although the actor who plays Raj grew up in India, he was born in London, England. He later spent more time in the UK, working with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Now that you know a bit more about the cast, perhaps you’ll watch the show differently. It’s always good to learn about the people behind the masks.
